Living Room: A Victim of Fickality

My living room has been very fickle. It couldn't decide what colors it wanted to be, it couldn't settle on a layout, and it's OCD about being the most perfect room in the house because it's the one everybody sees.

Ok, so maybe I'm the fickle one and I'm projecting all that onto my living space, but that's beside the point. The point is I'm obsessed with making this room perfect but it's still not where I want it to be. See those awkward square things above my couch? See that blank wall above the chair on the left? See that rug? YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS FOR ME TO CHOOSE A RUG???

*ahem*

Oh and when I say I'm fickle, this is what I mean...

I've gone through (drum roll please)... 3 rugs, 3 TV's, 2 chairs, 3 window treatments, 2 lamps, 10 throw pillows, and about 20 photoshopped color schemes for my living room. Yes, all within just a few months. And I have now officially acquired the title Queen of Returns, feared by customer service people in stores across the land!

For months my living room was nothing but a couch, coffee table, lamp, and furry purple rug from my dorm room. Gross. I cringed at the sight of beige on stone on cream, with icky purple as my only ounce of sad color. So against my frugal nature, I went on a Target-spree. Well not just one... a few back to back.

I'm not going to go into every little thing I bought or exactly how much lighter my wallet was afterward (it was a lot cheaper than I thought it'd be though!), but I will tell you that Target pretty much single-handedly transformed my living room into something actually livable. Yay Target! :)

So, is anyone else out there as fickle as me? Possibly another Queen of Returns out there? And what is your favorite affordable store to hit for room makeovers/updates?

Much love,
Katelyn

  1. I hear you on fickle, though I'm just learning to keep tags on things and return them. For years I would buy new stuff, donate the old stuff, and kick myself over and over for wasting the money. Better to go your way!

In terms of places... I started to discover at a certain point that my rooms looked a LOT like my friends' rooms, and their friends' rooms, and I realized it was because we were all shopping from the same places (namely Ikea, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond). So I now try to avoid those as much as possible. Not always possible to avoid Ikea, as I wrote about here, but I do my best! I love love LOVE HomeGoods because they get their stuff from all over and I know that it won't be instantly recognizable as Ikea circa 2001, like so much of my stuff used to be! :-)

  2. Thanks! Haha yeah I'm pretty sure my place has "Target circa 2010" written all over it. I did read your post on that actually, haha but I was so distracted by the cute doggies that I had to go back and REALLY read it a second time :P

Though I do love love love both Ikea and Target, you're right I need to be careful! It's easy for me to automatically go to those stores instead of taking the time to find cool, not-too-expensive stuff elsewhere. Thanks for the tip!
